Baktash
Sarang
Drawing, sculpture and installation on the human body and the buildings around it.
About
Born in Tehran in 1981. Lives and works in France.
Baktash Sarang works across drawing, architecture, sculpture and, more recently, installation and model-making. His subject is the human body and its relationship to the places people live in.
His master's project, the Tower of Silence, examined the decay of utopian architecture, and drew on historic towers in Iran. During a year at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid, he studied solitary-confinement cells in two Tehran prisons and one in Madrid, then built models of cells meant to stand in significant places across Iran.
In the drawings the body is the centre of the work. In the installations it becomes more abstract, but the scale of the human figure stays readable, and the viewer's presence completes the relationship between body and space.
